Farm Kids Mini Farmers – Companion Planting
March 4 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm$130
Farm Kids Mini Farmers – Companion Planting Workshop
@ The Farm Byron Bay
We look deeper into companion planting and which plants are friends and why at our Farm Kids workshop. We identify which herbs and flowers deter nasty insects and which plants bring in the good guys – beneficial bugs. We learn about planting within the right season, and even with the moon phase. Which are natives and introduced plant species? Can they complement each other? Weed species – some are okay in our gardens but they can take over if not correctly managed.
Make a pocket flower press, a portable mini flower press. Go on an adventure to collect and press flowers and leaves from the gardens. Fabric printing. Forage for extra flowers and botanicals. Using a hammer or mallet, we transfer the moisture and colour into fabric to create vibrant prints. If time allows, create bunting with our fabric pieces.
The kids become mini farmers and after a detailed tour get set to work doing farm chores. We collect eggs, restock our pet chickens bedding, ensure they have fresh water and clean out the coup. We work on our dedicated Farm Kids garden plot and tend to our onsite worm Subpod. If the opportunity arises, we assist the farmers with their chores. They forage, cook, make natural products, create and see where their food comes from as well as experience countless opportunities to learn about teamwork, community, and ethical farming practices.
